Community health centers are a key component of our health care system. They provide essential access to comprehensive primary care in underserved communities. The CHC program has experienced significant growth over time, particularly since the enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which expanded coverage options for many low-income health center patients and provided increased funding for health centers through the Community Health Center Fund (CHCF).
Facts and Figures:
As of 2025, based on federal data, CHCs serve approximately 34 million patients in over 17,000 urban and rural locations.
CHCs provide primary medical, dental, and mental health services as well as important medical screenings and preventive care education.
Their board members are uniquely sensitive to local challenges – at least 51% of all governing board members must also be patients of the clinic.
They are partially funded by Department of Health and Human Services.
